ACTING PRINCIPAL'S TALANOA
Moana Iese
Kia ora koutou, talofa lava and warm greetings to our Weymouth Community, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and our beautiful Tamariki.
Welcome back to another school year! We hope that you enjoyed your Christmas break and made many new memories with your loved ones. The start of the year has been a wonderful one. Our staff worked hard in the weeks leading up to our first day to prepare our classrooms, our environment, and our programmes for learning, and also took part in a week of professional development. Our spaces are looking fantastic! Be sure to pop in and take a look around. Although this is only our second week of school, there has been so much that has happened!
PŌWHIRI
Over the last two weeks, we have welcomed 72 new students to our school. We welcome you and your families and are pleased that you have joined our WPS whānau. Many of our new students and their families attended our pōwhiri on the first day, alongside our new teachers, Whaea Louise (R2) and Miss Cash (R23), our new Social Worker in School Ana Tukia, and two new support staff, Whaea Una and Whaea Dayna. Welcome, welcome, welcome.
TRANSITION INFORMATION HUI
Last night, Mrs Hodge hosted this hui to provide information on scholarships on offer for students who are transitioning to Intermediate next year. Thank you to the several whānau who came to listen. There are a few on offer, however the closing dates are near. If you’d like to know a little more about this, please come and see Mrs Hodge.
TALANOA AKO PROGRAMME
Talanoa Ako is a programme to equip and empower families to champion their child/rens education. We have parents who are registered for this programme that will run for 9 weeks. We had a wonderful first session of talanoa, getting to know each other, and sharing information about the programme. We look forward to working alongside you for the next 8 weeks.
SWIM SAFE SESSIONS
Our students are currently taking part in Swim Safe lessons which teaches our children how to be safe in and around water. We expect all our children to take part in these lessons. They will need to bring their togs, a towel and a bag to hold their wet gear in afterwards. Our pool is also open at lunchtimes for children to have a swim.
Learning to swim is part of The New Zealand Curriculum, which states that ‘all students will have had opportunities to learn basic aquatic skills by the end of Year 6’ and that students will have access to learning about water safety and developing aquatic skills. It also notes that parents, families and whānau also play an important role in keeping children and young people safe beyond school.
MEET AND GREET
A reminder that we have our ‘Meet and Greet’ evening on Tuesday 27 February from 3pm-5pm. Come along and meet your child’s class teacher, let your child show you their learning space, and come and talk to some of our supporting people and organisations and see how they might be able to support you and your family.
SPECIALIST CLASSES
This year we are blessed to have staff members who will be taking specialist classes as part of our learning programme and to release teachers to do planning and assessments. All classes will experience the following specialist classes throughout the term.

LEADERS ASSEMBLY
Today our senior students heard about all the roles and responsibilities that we have to offer this year. Have a talk to your child about some of the roles that they might be interested in and encourage them to apply. Teachers will also support their applications.
WHAT CAN YOU WEAR TO SCHOOL?
Monday - Students can wear their coloured house shirts
Tuesday -Thursday - Students wear their school uniform
Friday - Students can wear mufti or their uniform
PHONE REGULATIONS
As you are aware the new government has required schools to have phone policies in place. As a school we are working on this policy and it will be shared with our community for feedback. We currently ask that if students are bringing phones to school that they are to be handed in to the office as soon as they get to school, and can pick them up when they leave.
ATTENDANCE
We are aiming for 90% attendance this year - we want every child at school, every day! If you are needing support or are having difficulty getting your child to school, please discuss this with the class teacher.
START TIME / FINISH TIME
Classes open at 8.30am so we ask that children don’t come to school before 8.30am. If you are a working parent and your child needs to be at school before 8.30am, we have before/after school care. If you require this service please collect a form from the office. If your child is late they need to check in at the office to sign in.
School finishes at 3pm, except for the last day of each term when we finish at 2pm. If on the odd occasion you are needing to pick your child up earlier than 3pm you will need to go to the office to sign your child out. The adult signing a child out will need to be on our system to do so. This is a safety procedure we have in place to keep your child safe.
PICK UP AND DROP OFF ZONE
The yellow posts outside our front gate marks a pick-up and drop-off zone only. Please don’t park and leave your car unattended. When you drive in, please move as far forward as you possibly can, so that traffic can flow. If your child is not out at the time you are waiting in our zone, please don’t be offended if we ask you to drive through and come back round. This zone is regularly flowing with cars and is not the ideal place to cross your children through. There are safer crossing areas located a little further down from each side of the pick-up and drop-off zone. Thank you for your cooperation and helping us to keep our children safe.
